GHOSTS OF THE BC PENITENTIARY
© 2009 Candice James – Poet Laureate

(The BC Penitentiary was British Columbia’s main prison, situated in the heart of New Westminster, BC overlooking the mighty Fraser River,  from 1876-1980.)

On the old Pen property spirits lurk and hide,

Ghostly voices whisper in the pale moonlight.

A heavy door slams shut with a thunderous clap.

A frayed noose dangles above a floor trap,

As yesterday’s ghosts still walk these grounds at night. (more…)

Nemesis

I sit here talking Captain Morgan jive,

My tongue loosed by the pull of spicy rum;

I sip the music down and come alive

I beetle down inside a droning hum,

The room starts spinning as old ghosts pass by.

I smile at each and proffer all a wink;

Though mostly surly, one gives me the eye.

Nirvana’s caught in never ending blink

As Tweedle dum embraces Tweedle dee.

The barroom drunks now reeling, sing and hiss,

In karaoke’s veiled cacophony

But I’m oblivious with whiskey kiss. (more…)

HOT NIGHTS

© 2012 Candice James

Hot nights, tender and cruel,

Wet, slick, flaming moments

Licking our bodies

Whipping this dream

To a higher state of frenzy.

BLEAK HOUSE ALLEY

© 2012 Candice James

On the East side of Vancouver

In Bleak House Alley

Peppered with cardboard creatures,

A crude Cinderella,

Drooping wax figurine,

Cracked and creased with age,

Candling the night

Weaves phantom dreams

In the pale twilight.

Terrible melted wax figurine

With large, grotesque, bloated lips

Spewing poisonous vapor

In a cacaphony of venomous words.

Semi-dead zombie

Enslaved by your addictions and ego,

An unwelcome, uninvited presence

Cutting your way

In scattered scissor steps

Through the lives

Of your imagined, maligned enemies. (more…)

CAVING OUT

There was always that single shaft of sunlight

Where it came from or how it got in

Was always a mystery.

All she had ever known

Was this multi shaded brown sky.

Always there;  never ending.

She was born in this cave;

Lived in this cave, but didn’t want to die in this cave. (more…)

THE ROOM

Inside this sinister paradigm of doom

Surrounding me with unholy noises,

The walls vibrate with the dirge of the undead

And crack under the high pitched screech of rabid bats.

Eerie, ghostly vapours

Trickle in under the warped petrified doors

Of this floating room of secrets I’m locked in.

DIMENSIONS,  LIGHT AND WHIMSY

I’m sitting outside on a cool balmy night

And pondering the science and laws of light

The glow on the horizon is a sizzling twinkle

And I’m wond’ring about a space time wrinkle (more…)

‘Sharma Lon’ by Guest Poet Candice James

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

I dreamed of a mystical land in lost sea.

As I walked the shoreline of eternity,

Waves danced with sand beneath my bare feet.

The aroma of palm trees drifting to meet me

As I took my leave to Sharma Lon. (more…)

Sacrosanct Shade by Guest Poet Candice James

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

I danced on the edge of a Tsunami wave,

Tripping, stumbling, slipping into dark cave;

Losing loose grasp on subconsciousness,

Spirit unwrapped in full state of undress.

Waking, baking in suffocating heat,

Head swimming in pain with aching pulse beat,

Fumbling in pocket, find a match and light it. (more…)
