IMG_3641   The Arts and Entertainment Magazine recently journeyed to the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a travel destination interest for our readers. The area is the premier visitor destination on the Atlantic coast of the United States and is one of the only few locations where wild horses roam in this section of the country. Our adventure lasted five days and was planned by Maryann O’Donnell and photographed by both our publisher and our staff photographer Joseph O’ Donnell IV. We have included pictures of our visit along with tips and advisories for those who wish to make this journey. (more…)

TAEM interview with actress Marianne Mills

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

headshotTAEM- The Arts and Entertainment Magazine is always excited to present Hollywood personalities to all our readers. One such personality is actress Marianne Mills who will be an inspiration to all the Students of the Arts who follow our magazine to inspire their own careers. Marianne has been good enough to describe her journey into stardom as an example for them all.

Marianne, your first experience in acting took place during a high school theater when you were just a teenager. How exhilarating was this for you and how did it build your confidence for your future career ?

MM- Hi, First I would like to thank you for asking me to describe my journey into stardom, however I would say that I really am an aspiring star. I do believe however, if as an actor if you work very hard, you believe in yourself and if you are able to notice an opportunity when it comes your way, that you are well on your way to stardom. I have always liked to perform, even as a young child. I was always the one that had to put on plays in my backyard, or dance for the video camera when my parents filmed home movies. When I got to high school in New Orleans, I decided to join the drama club. Through that I was able to meet other actors, people that had a lot in common with me. I worked on a couple of plays in high school, on stage and behind the scenes. It was a very exhilarating experience and I just knew that it was what I wanted to do. I also got involved in many beauty pageants in my teen years. Through that I was able to meet great people that helped to guide me along the way into how to achieve my dreams. It was also a great experience as it was on a stage in front of hundreds of people, helping me to gain self confidence during my teen years, a time when people’s self confidence or lack of it can change on a daily basis. I feel that when a teenager gets involved in something that they enjoy doing, that it really can help them to stay out of trouble and gain self confidence. (more…)

‘Pass The Salt’ by author Glenn James

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

Dark Fantasy Writer and Illustrator Glenn James has a long standing familiarity with Doctor Who. In the summer of 2014 he was asked to undertake a rather special commission for a private collector, a man with a deep and affectionate knowledge of the programme. The resulting illustration followed a very unusual route, as the following article reveals.

© By Glenn James 2014 (Black Biro and Ink, Black watercolour Paint and Chinagraph Pencil on Mount board.)

Left to right: The War Doctor (John Hurt), the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann), the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston), the 10th Doctor (David Tenant), the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith), River Song (Alex Kingston), Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman, standing), the First Doctor (William Hartnell, seated centre), the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi, standing), the 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton, seated), the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker, standing), the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee, seated), the 6th Doctor (Colin Baler, with cats), the 5th Doctor (Peter Davidson), and the 7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy)

As a fantasy artist I have been asked to undertake some unusual works in my time, but this one was a real challenge: How to portray all the incarnations of Doctor Who together, and do something really fresh and original with the composition.

Putting all the Doctors together is no new thing in artistic terms. You often see illustrations or posters depicting all of them in one composition, and this was especially true at the time of the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2013.   Conventionally this is usually a matter of showing the various actors faces side by side in one illustration, usually in chorological order of the incarnations, with the most current one to the fore. J&J Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

Guardians of the Galaxy-5Marvel has done it again! The Guardians of the Galaxy was a smash hit. At first glance at the trailers, my expectations of the movie were very low because these were not your well known Marvel superheroes or super heroines.

The movie starts off with the main character Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt for the opening scene. Peter Quill is an space outlaw and a thief and he calls himself, star-lord, which no one seems to know him by. Peter is followed by Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper , a genetically enhance rodent who is brilliant and well armed. Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, is a strong and loyal living tree creature with a lack of a vocabulary. Drax played, by Dave Bautista, is a powerful alien warrior with no common sense. Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, is a sexy, lethal, no-non sense alien assassin. Other actors and well known people make their appearance in movie like Michael Rooker, Lee Peace, Glenn Close, Stan Lee, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Benicio Del Toro and Lloyd Kaufman. (more…)

Come Fly Away – Our portfolio again outperformed the S&P 500 over the past seven weeks. Big gains from JetBlue Airways (JBLU) and Facebook (FB) spearheaded our portfolio’s almost 2% gain, while the S&P 500 gained 0.15%. Although geopolitical contributed to losses in Goodyear (GT), Vanguard FTSE Europe (VGK), and International Paper (IP), the majority of our positions had gains during the period. Since its January 9 inception, our portfolio has risen 12.18%, while the S&P 500 has gained 8.21%.

JetBlue is now our best performing position, following its 15.7% gain over the past seven weeks. The stock was helped by falling oil prices and an upgrade from an analyst who noted that the company will be making changes in its services to emphasize profit. JetBlue is already one of the more profitable airlines.   (more…)

Joseph J. O’Donnell’s ‘My Virginia’: Williamsburg Attractions

Thursday, July 31st, 2014

The-Alliance     Recently The Arts and Entertainment Magazine decided to tour the southern coastal region of Virginia and discover some of the wonders of the area. Notably Williamsburg is famous for Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg, so we decided to see what other hidden treasures the region held. We chanced upon the historical site of Yorktown, not far from the Williamsburg tourist attractions. There we discovered Yorktown Sailing Charters.

There are two sailing schooners available, the three-masted Alliance and the smaller two-masted Serenity. We naturally opted for the Alliance which was available at the time. The schooner is a seventy-five ton steel hulled ship handled easily by a three person crew. This includes its captain, Alex, and a well trained crew consisting of Emily and Darby. All three were gracious and knowledgeable and allowed us to help them set the sails.

The charter service also has a Pirate Adventure cruise in which both ships depart the Yorktown dock and actually fire live cannons at each other while sailing on the York River. The river is also a deep river port of bygone days and presently is used by the Navy and Coast Guard vessels for training and docking. (more…)

The Absence

In the absence of all,
Walking beneath the big blue tent,
Clouds drift and scramble impatiently
Across the vast expanse of sky.
Night claws its way over the edge
Staining the blue
Like spilled ink.

Alone on the path
I search for another set of eyes
In the semi-glow of dusk.

Somewhere
There is water
Scrubbing the back of a warm beach.
Somewhere
There are sheep
Wending their way home
Under the weary gaze of a shepherd boy. (more…)

‘The Tweed Update’ by Guest Author Roger Tweed

Continuing to Climb – Our 2014 portfolio, along with the major averages, overcame the Middle East turmoil and continued to post gains over the past three weeks. Riding a snap back in shares of Hertz Global (HTZ), along with gains in JetBlue Airways (JBLU), Goodyear (GT), Linn Co., LLC (LNCO), and International Paper (IP), the portfolio rose 2.78% since June 13. The S&P 500 gained 2.54% in the same period. Since its January 9 inception, our portfolio has risen 10.07%, while the S&P 500 has gained 8.05%.

Hertz was our best performer with a gain of 9.2%. To me, Hertz’ gain was simply a bounce back from the early June plunge suffered when Hertz announced its unreliable accounting issues and need to restate previous yearly results. Since the company has not commented on its financial issues since early June, this move is not based on any real information. I would continue to stay away from Hertz. JetBlue rose 6.5% as fiscal 2014 earnings estimates were raised and Zack’s Equity Research upgraded the stock to a buy. (more…)

TAEM interview with actor Ashton Bingham

Friday, June 27th, 2014

Ashton-Bingham-head-shotTAEM- The Arts and Entertainment Magazine has many followers among students of the Arts who use our publication as a learning tool to hone their careers. By taking the learning experiences of successful actors they are able to undertake the learning processes and avoid the pitfalls of those that we have interviewed.

One of the success stories that we like to tackle is the transition from television to the silver screen. We also like to explore the differences between the two types of acting for our readers to digest. One actor who straddles these venues is Ashton Bingham.

Ashton, what enticed you to take up acting for your career and who were your greatest influences to do so?

AB- I was first enticed at the age of 8, when my grandfather taught me a magic trick. That small action became the catalyst that completely shaped the rest of my childhood, all the way through high school. Every fiber of my being looked forward to learning my next magic trick, and performing it for my next spectator. I wasn’t much of a partier in school; I spent my time and allowance practicing, honing my sleight of hand, and acquiring more learning materials. By the time college hit, I was working very consistently in the northern Nevada area at corporate gigs, kids’ birthday parties, restaurants, and theaters, performing everything from close up card tricks, to large stage illusions (yes I did cut my assistant in half!). How did this lead me to acting you ask?? Well, like magic, I had a major fascination with making movies and acting in them. It was hard to catch me without a camera in my hand; but despite the fact that this hobby fell by the wayside a bit when magic came along, it was a fire inside me that never died. As I was finishing up my second year of college, I had to pick a direction. And as much as I would have loved to have my own show in Vegas…I dreamt bigger. It took me about 9 months, but I made all the necessary arrangements, packed everything, left everyone I knew, and moved to Los Angeles on January 9th, 2010 – the most exhilarating and terrifying day of my life to date. Joseph J. O’Donnell’s “My Virginia: State Arboretum of Virginia”

Friday, June 27th, 2014

walk-way     The Commonwealth of Virginia offers a variety of exciting and interesting places to visit. It also offers some historical, educational, and natural wonders to explore.

In some of my last articles I had introduced The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Aldie Mill, and back trail hiking among some other interesting places to visit. One of the best hidden treasures is the State Arboretum of Virginia located near Boyce Virginia just off of Rte. 50 in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The location itself is beautiful with a panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley a short distance away.

The Arboretum offers several walking trails if you are in a mood for a short hike and wildflower walks for your visual pleasure. The entrance from Rte. 50 leaves you off at a large brick structure which houses an old estate. Many weddings are also held here due to the pleasant surroundings that the site offers. There are also a number of ponds and gentle rolling hills giving a tranquil feeling to all the visitors. (more…)

A Patch Of Black Grass

I set fire to a patch of black grass

Burnt by an unforgiving sun

Peeling back layers of over-ripe skin

On the seeds of this still-life painting.

This day is a fast rolling ball of fire

Chasing me down like a rabid dog

On the heels of a desperate clown

Walking an ice-glazed tightrope

In loose fitting second hand shoes,

All semblance of balance

Tossed aside for the thrill of the kill.

‘The Tweed Update’ by Roger Tweed

Tranquil Waters- Our 2014 portfolio took advantage of the very calm trading environment of the past three weeks to post a gain of 3.16%. More significantly, when stocks came under pressure on June 11 and 12, our positions weathered the storm and held on to most of their gains. In contrast, the S&P 500 gained 1.87% in the same period. Since its January 9 inception, our portfolio has risen 7.1%, while the S&P 500 has gained 5.4%.

Our biggest gainer since May 23 was JetBlue Airways (JBLU) which rose 12.3%. The end of winter weather problems, and the carrier’s introduction of its Mint premium service, combined to pique traders’ interest in this laggard of the airline sector. Linn Co., LLC (LNCO), picked up 9% as oil prices rose and the company took steps to shore up its 10% payout. (more…)

J&J Movie Review- X-Men: Days of Future Past

Friday, June 27th, 2014

x-men-days-of-future-past-movie-poster1   For another of our Summer movie reviews we had chosen X-Men: Days of Future Past as an exciting addition to the season’s lineup of films. We attended the movie in the Manassas Regal Cinema just off of Rte. 235 and Interstate 66. We found this theater most comfortable and the parking was excellent. We also attended the film during the weekend matinee. This made the viewing more pleasurable as we did not have to deal with large crowds.

The film was one of the better action films in this series. It links a lot of the other films in the X-Men stories together but also digs deep into each of the characters personalities as well. This makes for a more solid story line for the film. (more…)

A New Jim Carrey- The way acting should be! A J&J Movie Review

Friday, May 30th, 2014

Jimcarey   Sometimes one must take a step back in order to move forward. So is this true for today’s Cinema. We recently caught The Majestic on HBO. The film made its debut in 2001 and I must admit that I had never seen it. After watching a spate of films with Jim Carrey ( Ace Ventura, The Mask) I was not up to watching more slapstick at that time. Now I regret not seeing it when it first appeared on screen.

The film had followed another attempt by Carrey in The Truman Show, which was first seen in 1998, to reveal his more serious side. Set in 1951, it is about a blacklisted Hollywood writer that gets into a car accident, loses his memory and settles down in a small town where he is mistaken for a long-lost son. Martin Landau plays the role of the father who believes that Carrey, after missing in action during World War II, returns home after suffering memory loss. Laurie Holden, plays Carrey’s sweetheart, and also becomes convinced of Carrey’s new identity. (more…)

TAEM interview with author Jane Bow

Friday, May 30th, 2014

author Jane BowTAEM- The Arts and Entertainment Magazine originated to uphold the work of authors and explore the foundation behind their creations. Every good story is based on the author’s own experiences or historical facts, which breathe life into a writer’s work. This adds to the realism of the story.
We are therefore proud to introduce author Jane Bow to all of our readers. Jane, tell us about your childhood and how your parents’ careers helped shape your future.

JB- My parents were Canadian diplomats so I spent more than half my childhood abroad, in New York City, in Spain during the 1950’s, and behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia at the height of the Cold War. The school I went to in Spain was an old French Lycee, dark, grimy windows, a dirt courtyard to play in with a high wall separating girls from boys. Girls who didn’t pay attention in class were tied to their chairs or made to stand in the waste basket. I played in Spanish, learned in French, spoke English at home. When I returned to Canada, I was amazed to see colored leaf projects on the classroom walls, and kids leaping up to do the twist as soon as the teacher left the room. (more…)
